DUI truck accidents can cause injuries and fatalities

Semi-truck drivers will often drive in and through Kentucky. Although most truckers will adhere to proper safety procedures and follow federal regulations, there are always drivers who might get behind the wheel after drinking, while too drowsy to drive safely, or operate the vehicle recklessly. This can cause truck accidents. The difference between a truck and other vehicles is the sheer size and speed at which they travel. Being in an accident with a semi can cause injury and death. Those who have been hurt or lost a loved one in a truck crash must assess their options for being compensated in a lawsuit.

A semi-truck being driven by a 60-year-old man who was believed to have been under the influence hit and killed a law enforcement officer. The accident occurred in the early morning hours not long after 2 a.m. The officer, a 32-year-old female with more than seven years on the force, had stopped a pickup truck. The vehicles were on the right side of the road. Her cruiser's overhead lights were on. As she went about her duties, the semi crashed into the back of her cruiser while she was in it.

The impact sent the cruiser into the pickup. There were four people in the pickup. Their injuries were not believed to be serious. The cruiser ignited and she was killed. Other members of law enforcement investigated the crash and found the driver of the truck was under the influence. He was arrested on multiple charges including DUI and murder of a law enforcement officer.

Truck accidents are sometimes unavoidable, but when the accident happens because of driver behavior or negligence, it did not need to happen. People who have been affected by a truck accident will have a lot to consider after it has happened. This is magnified when there is a fatality. It is made even worse when it is a person who is simply doing his or her job and is killed as they go about their duties.

People who have lost a loved one will have financial and personal issues to get through. Thinking about the long-term future can be difficult leaving them vulnerable to accepting an insurance settlement that does not adequately compensate them for all they lost. The evidence and investigation is key no matter who was in the accident. A law firm that has experience in truck accidents can help with pursuing compensation after a fatal crash and should be called for help without delay.
