3 safety tips for teen drivers

Driving for the first few months can be exciting yet scary. You get to enjoy the freedom of getting behind the wheel, but you also have to face unique risks and the possibility of getting in an accident. While you should be proud of the accomplishment of becoming a new driver, you should always brush up on your driving techniques and learn about safety.

That is why we have compiled this list of things you should keep in mind every time you get behind the wheel. Follow these guidelines and you will be able to enjoy driving free of stress and collisions.

1. Avoid technology distractions

You grew up with technology all around you. Smartphones and tablets are part of your daily life. While these devices can help you connect with people, you should avoid using them while you drive. According to Consumer Reports, 11 percent of teen drivers who got into a fatal crash were distracted. Texting is not the only problem–using any app such as Snapchat or Instagram is also dangerous. Even taking your eyes away from the road for a few seconds can lead to an accident.

2. Pay attention to the road

Driving home from school or to a movie with your car full of your friends can be fun, but it is easy to give in to distractions. Getting lost in conversation can be potentially dangerous. While you do not necessarily need to be totally quiet or ignore everyone in your car, remember that your top priority is operating your vehicle safely.

3. Recognize hazards

Know when a seemingly safe situation can be dangerous. For example, driving at night on unfamiliar streets can result in an accident. Heavy raining can lead to flooding. If you do not have much driving experience, you should know when to not get behind the wheel or drive somewhere unfamiliar.
